Masque Africain

The variety and the quality of the works of art in the Marcel Sahut Museum are drawing the course and the choices of a man during his life: his life as an advertising man, a book illustrator and an artist.

Son of a stone cutter and sculptor himself, Marcel Sahut begins drawing at a very early age. With the breakthrough of WWI, he has to earn his living. He is successively a restorer, a picture framer and a gilder. And that is how he acquires a good technical ability in the trade of arts. At he same time he takes evening courses at “l’école des Beaux-Arts”. Then he studies both at Grenoble University and in the School of Industrial Arts.

In 1919 he founds with the painter Louise Morel (his future first wife) an artistic group called the “Effort”. This group organizes from 1919 to 1930 the “Salon de l’Effort” then the “Salon de Grenoble”, which are among the first modern art exhibitions in the province. From 1930 to 1934, he is responsible for the hangings at the “Salon des Tuileries” in Paris. He meets numerous artists (Friesz, Gromaire…) and exchanges works of art. At the same time, Marcel Sahut keeps on painting. In 1929, “ les poissons” (the fishes) wins the Viking’s first Prize. He travels then through Europe (Norway, Spain…).

After WWII, he settles in Provence, because of its light. From this years, his works are showed in various art galleries and museum(Museum of Grenoble, Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence, Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris…). In 1988, he gives his paintings, drawings and water-colors and his personal collection of works of art to the City of Volvic. He dies on April 12th 1990.
