In the heart of Volvic – the town of water and stone – a must-see place awaits you.

            Known worldwide for its mineral water, Volvic contains another treasure: stone. Within exceptional natural surroundings, La Maison de la Pierre reveals one element of Volvic’s wonderful heritage. Go deep into the heart of the lava flow from the Nugère volcano to discover the story of this place, and of the men who worked there from the 13th century.

Rewind time…

 Through an original, one-hour multi-media presentation, walk in the footsteps of Jean Legay-Chevalier, one of the leading quarrymen of the 1900s. His faithful foreman, Jules Cotte, tells you the story of this captivating character. 
Across four unique zones, find out about the human adventure behind Volvic stone. Relive the daily life of the quarrymen, penetrate the secret of the Volvic water source and immerse yourself in the long history of this cave.

 After this journey through the past, see our exhibition hall where current artists’ work is shown.  
You can then have some time with a presenter who will answer all your questions.

 Not to be missed…

 If you are a group, have a go at lava enamelling, in a workshop run by a craftsman of the art. Lasting two hours for adults, 1 hour 15 minutes for students, each participant will create their own enamelled lava. 
Must be pre-booked (either at La Maison de la Pierre or at Lemptégy Volcano).

La Maison de la Pierre 2012 opening times


Lengt of visit : approximately 1 hour, in groups of up to 25 people, departing every 15 minutes

13 february to 6 april  :  2pm to 6pm*  every day except saturday,  

7 april to 8 july :   2pm to 6pm*  every day

9 july to 26 august : 10pm to 7pm*  every day

27 august to 07 november : 2pm to 6pm*  every day except saturday,

* Last visit starts one hour before closing

 The site is open to groups, upon prior reservation, fron 14 february to 11 november. Closed in december and january



            - The site is accessible to people in wheelchairs.

            - Remember to bring warm clothing - the temperature in the grotto is 10°C (50°F)
